Lie #2: “God Hates the Sin and Sinner.”

13.
When we buy into this lie, we make turning away from the sin much more difficult. Why?
14.
The story of the woman caught in adultery is a classic example of God’s true concept of the sin versus sinner relationship. Read John 8:3-11. Whom did the Pharisees bring before Jesus? (vs. 3)
15.
What did the law of Moses say should be done in such a case? (vs. 5)
16.
What did Jesus say and do when the Pharisees asked Him what should be done with the adulterous woman? (vs. 6-8)
a)
b)
c)
What Jesus wrote on the ground is not recorded, but some think He was writing in the dust a list of the sins committed by the Pharisees in His presence.
17.
What was the Pharisees’ response? (vs. 9)
18.
After everyone had left, what did Jesus say to the woman? (vs. 11)
Some early Christians avoided reading this passage in church, because they thought Jesus said here that he did not condemn adultery. After some time, this passage was even left out of some copies of Scripture as well. However, Jesus frankly told the adulterous woman to sin no more. He condemned the sin, but did not pass sentence on the sinner.
