CHAPTER 3: Worldly Lies
Lie #4: “Life Should Be Fair.”
Name:

48.
Fairness is encouraged in the classroom, and at home, and has fostered the belief in some people that life should ...
49.
The truth is ...
50.
What is the most difficult thing for a person to do, when they have been harboring a grudge for a past “unfairness” so many years?
51.
The theological truth about the “Fair Life” lie can be found in Ecclesiastes 8:14. It says that there are 2 seemingly unjust things in life:
a)
b)
This is just man’s viewpoint, and even the righteous are tempted to look at things this way, but eventually we will all see these things from God’s viewpoint.
52.
A parable that demonstrates this concept perfectly can be found in Matthew 20:1-16. What did the land manager promise to pay the first group he hired? (vs. 2)
53.
What did he promise to pay those whom he hired later? (vs. 4-5)
54.
How much did he pay the men who had worked only one hour? (vs. 9)
55.
How much did those who had worked all day receive? (vs. 10)
56.
Were all the workers happy with their pay? Did this seem fair to them?
57.
Was the land manager unfair in the way he treated the all-day workers? (vs. 12-15)
In this parable, we learn that fairness does not mean that one is unable to be more than fair (generous) when led to do so. Fairness means that each person is treated justly, rightly, and properly. No one will be hurt by fair treatment.
